I have been teaching cello for more than 30 years, starting in Munich during my studies, later on in Vienna and for the past 24 years in Spain. It continues to be my passion and even though my methodology changed over the years, the foundations of my teaching always remained the same. They are based on natural body movements that correspond to the individual physiognomy of the student and on the fundamental laws of physics that are often overlooked when it comes to learning new motor skills of any sort.

There are many ways to reach a goal and in consequence, there are many ways to learn playing a musical instrument. I opt for the shortest path, avoiding unnecessary detours. In order to efficiently coordinate the tremendously complex body movements, particularly for stringed instruments, it is paramount to understand and follow the logical chain of events that take place when we play the cello. Much like with any other movements we perform during our daily lives, our bodies will instinctively do the right thing if we allow it. I consider it one of my prime objectives as a teacher to remove the obstacles that students tend to battle with and which won’t allow them to move around (and with) their instrument naturally, thus never reaching their full potential. Playing the cello should give us physical comfort at all times. We should not have to suffer from any self-induced pains or ailments if we use the natural laws of physics to our advantage.

I live in Spain and teach in German, English and Spanish language. Please contact me, if you are interested in my methodology and want to arrange for a lesson or course. For online (Skype) classes please see the information on the related webpage.

Teaching has been one of the most satisfying aspects in my professional career. I agreed to take on a student as requested by my teacher, just after I'd obtained a master's degree in performance. Little did I know what an important part of my life it would become. Working with students on a regular basis is truly satisfying. The interaction with each and every student motivates one to question, rethink, experiment on, and discover ways to resolve problems, thus paving the way for each student to use his or her full potential. In the process, the teacher is continuously learning too.

The most important aspects of teaching are:

    • Technical
Involves the pure physics of playing an instrument. starting from a completely relaxed position, one has to learn to manage balance, weight, bow- speed, vibration of strings in order to produce a good sound. Train the ear to find the pitch and position the fingers to produce the notes, etc etc.... the list is never-ending. This is the cornerstone of violin playing. With a thorough understanding of how everything works, the student's learning curve is a steady upward one.
    • Musical
To enjoy listening to and playing music. To train the ear to recognize different styles and to perform pieces in their proper style- like learning to speak a language.
    • Mental
To learn the benefits of concentration and focused playing. To train the mind to reinforce good habits and a good attitude during practise and performance.

Teaching is a commitment. With it comes a great responsibility, but it is a continuous
    source of enrichment and inspiration.

There are many scenarios where the ideal situation of a one to one lesson is not possible or desirable. Geographic separation, timetable incompatibilities and other reasons. Sometimes it also does not seem to be strictly necessary to have a tutor sitting physically in front of the student in order to give as assessment of the problems that have to be resolved.

We do almost everything online these days and it only seems logical to also use those technologies for studying and self-improvement. Having always been an avid long distance student, I can see only advantages in combining normal studies with online courses.

There are limitations of course, as we depend on bandwidth, individual setup, sound quality of the equipment involved, to just name a few of the factors involved. However, my experience is that it is under most circumstances possible to establish a useful connection. I have students as far away as Patagonia/Argentina/India and with a bit of ingenuity, most problems can be solved.

I offer different modalities, from regular lessons to the quick fix for an isolated problem with particular repertoire and my policy is, not to charge for lessons until all technical parameters have been resolved to mutual satisfaction. There might be situations where it is just not possible to establish a good connection and it seems unethical to me to charge in those situations. Similarly, if a student wants only help with an isolated problem, I will not charge beforehand, but rely on a fair use policy that she/he will reimburse me for my efforts, once having received my assistance and help. There might be situations, where I cannot help with a given problem and again it would seem unethical to charge in those situations.

I will not supply photocopies of copyrighted materials! Any scores that form part of my methodology will have to be purchased from the available editorial outlets/music stores. However, I will supply at occasion my own exercises, for which I hold the copyright and which may not be distributed without my consent.

I give classes in German, English and Spanish language. Please contact me for further information and scheduling of online classes.
